How Is Imaging the New Moon Even Possible Near the Sun?
Posted at
I’m genuinely confused how imaging the new Moon is even possible when it’s sitting so close to the Sun. Without a solar filter it’s obviously unsafe, but when a solar filter is on, the Moon all but disappears and there’s nothing visible to frame or focus on. Since the Moon isn’t emitting light and the filter blocks nearly everything except the Sun, how would one realistically locate and image the new Moon at all without risking equipment or eyesight? I'm thinking about this for the lunar badge and all I can think of that would be safe and effective would be to take a picture of the Sliver Moon. Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome.
