The Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR)
This image captures a delicate portion of the vast and intricate Vela Supernova Remnant, the expanding debris field left behind by a massive star that ended its life in a spectacular explosion approximately 11,000–12,000 years ago. Located roughly 800 light-years away in the southern constellation Vela, this remnant spans an enormous area of sky, stretching over several degrees. The fine, filamentary structures seen here are shock fronts glowing ribbons of ionized hydrogen and oxygen energized by the expanding blast wave as it collides with the surrounding interstellar medium. #To the depths of the universe#
